Mad Men: At The Codfish Ball

Well HELLO THERE, ROGER.  Last night's episode we learnt lessons in LOCKING THE DOOR.  Gawd.  There were many episode highlights, so make sure you read up on them after the jump.

  • Sally is trapped at Bates Manor with her step-grandmother and Bobby because the happy newly weds decided to go on another trip.  She calls up her old perv friend and while they're chatting, the grandmother trips and breaks her ankle.  HONESTLY? Such a buzz kill.
  • Don and Megan are having Megan's parents over for the weekend and they seem...pleasant.  Megan's mom pretty much spends the whole night looking at Don like:

  • The next morning Megan comes to Don with a genius pitch for the Heinz people about beans always being there and what not.  It's a classic Don pitch so obv he's all
  • Don and Megan go out with Ken and his wife and the Heniz clients.  Ugh.  Already.  Mrs. Heinz tells Megan that her husband didn't even really want to waste the time to come, but he'd much rather just do it in the office.  Megan gets that this means HAHAHAH WE'RE FIRING YOU TOMORROW BUT TOTES WILL TAKE THAT FREE DINNER.
  • Megan tells Don what's up and they go into emergency pitch mode and HUZZAH they save the account.  They come back to the office in the morning and their entrance is pretty much this:
  • Even Pete is happy.  That little bastard.
  • Roger meets with Mona because now he is just high off life and wants her help to get some clients.  He is now officially worshiping at the church of LSD.
  • Peggy's buzzkill of a boyfriend calls her up and says they MUST go out for dinner. Can't be in the office has to be out, he needs to talk to her. Peggsters knows she's getting dumped. He hasn't exactly been the most happy person in the world.
  • She goes to Joan for a smoke and some advice. Joan tells her she's probs going to get proposed to and she should probbbb go shopping since she owns frumpy Catholic school girl clothes.
  • Turns out old Abe-o doesn't want to marry her per se, but more wants to make her a filthy tramp and shack up before their married. This is almost worse than that time Lydia escaped away with Mr. Wickam and Mr. Darcy had to go save her honor so she wouldn't bring shame to the rest of the Bennett sisters (it's not at all but who doesn't love a good Pride and Prejudice reference!).
  • Peggy is insulted as all hell but keeps smiling in a way that would make me put away all the dinner knives. Despite her shock, she says yes.
  • The Draper clan get ready to go to a ball for the American Cancer Society because Don is being awarded for some bullshit letter he wrote when he was trying to stick one to Lucky Strike. The awards just a bonus!
  • Megan convinced him to let Sally come and bought her a new outfit that I will now call Dream Outfit #3. Except dad's totes lame and makes her take off those hip go go boots and the makeup.
  • Roger comes as well and Megan's mom is already putting the moves on him. But he's alone for the night so Sally gets the privilege of being his date.
  • At the dinner, every one's impressed (except for Megan's dad who's a communist and thinks Don is rubbing his wealth in his face. ...Sorry dude I would think most dads would be happy that their daughter found a rich old husband that touching doesn't make her gag. The dream, no?).
  • Don schmoozes the room and everyone can't say enough about how much they loved the letter. For cancer purposes. But it's not like anyone in the room would ever work with you again for business HAHAHAHAHAHAH OOPS DID MY DRUNK ASS JUST LET THAT SLIP??????
  • Sally is having a grand time being Roger's date. She's helping him collect business cards from potential clients and is not realizing the GET AT ME eyes Megan's mom is shooting him from across the table.
  • Megan's dad, despite hearing about his daughter's huge success/accomplishment she had this week still isn't impressed. He wants her to quit her steady, profitable job at the ad agency to pursue a career as an actress. The sixties sure were backwards time. I think if this was now and she told him that's what she was doing she'd get slapped and maybe disowned. Or at least that's what I would do.
  • Back with Peggy, she and Abe have invited her mother over for dinner to share the news that they're moving in together. I'm sure that will go QUITE well with the woman who regularly has the priest over for dinner.  QUITE.
  • Obviously, her mom is all BITCH, PLEASE. There's no way she's going to be ok with this. It's the sixties. My mom would still prob have the same reaction. Peggy says it's because he's Jewish but Ma sets it straight. He's practicing, and going to leave your ass for some other girl to marry. You know she's right, Peggy.
  • Sally's had one too many Shirley Temples and needs to utilize the restroom. And like any normal person, she opens up an UNLOCKED door that seems would lead to one.
  • Sally opens the door to see Megan's mom, her step GRANDMOTHER, er pleasuring Roger.
  • She comes back to the table horrified and cringes when grandmama comes back to the table and wipes her mouth (ok I cringed but STILL).
  • So there sits the happy table. The father who can't get his book published, the daughter who doesn't like her job, the mother who just did that to a stranger, Don who is probbb going to have some real trouble getting client, and Sally who is permanently scared for life.
  • When Sally gets back home she calls her perv friend (who is wearing only a cost and boots?) and he asks her how Manhattan is. "Dirty." Oh Sally. How Sybil of you.
